IBCA Loses a Coaching Legend

The IBCA lost one of its coaching legends on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009.  Longtime Collinsville basketball coach and charter member of the IBCA Hall of Fame, Vergil Fletcher passed away the day before his 94th birthday.

Every once in awhile a product comes along for coaches that becomes a standard for the profession.  A product that you stumble upon and then cannot wait to tell your colleagues about.  We believe the latest such product is a software program called FastDraw, and it allows you to VERY easily and quickly diagram your plays. Now, if that were all it did, I might not be as excited as I am, but it ALSO allows you to categorize the plays you draw by team, season, type of play, and several other useful categories. Here are the 3 features I was most impressed with:

2009 IBCA All-Star Games Set to Tip-Off

The 2009 IBCA All-Star Games will be played in June at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, IL (Illinois Wesleyan University).

The Girls All-Star Games will be played on Saturday, June 20th at 5pm (1A/2A) and 7pm (3A/4A).

The Boys All-Star Games will be played on Saturday, June 27th at 5pm (1A/2A) and 7pm (3A/4A).

Wierzba Named National Coach of the Year Finalist

Tom WierzbaThe IBCA would like to congratulate Farmington's Tom Wierzba on his selection as a National Coach of the Year Finalist by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.

The NHSACA recognizes coaches not just for a season of coaching, but for their "lifetime achievements." The NHSACA Coach of the Year awards are the most prestigious awards given to high school coaches in America.

Coach Wierzba is currently the IBCA's 1st Vice President and will begin his two-year term as President at the Fall Board Meeting.  He retired from coaching at the end of the 2009 season after 35 years as a head coach (26 of them spent at Farmington) and over 600 wins.

Dan Sparrow Defends His Title!

Dan Sparrow from Bartonville Limestone has remarkably won the IBCA Bracket Pool for the 2nd year in a row!  The IBCA partnered this year with Baden Sports to enhance the competition and increase the prizes.

Baden BasketballSparrow wins a Baden Autograph ball, a Baden notebook, and an IBCA T-Shirt for defending his title.

2nd and 3rd place went to Mike Bradford and Randy Marchand, respectively.  They each win a Baden Dry Erase Game board and an IBCA T-Shirt.

4th and 5th place went to Darren Howard and Sue Ellett, respectively.  Darren and Sue each win an IBCA T-Shirt!

Thanks to all who played this year, and to Baden for donating the prizes.  We had an incredible turnout and look forward to running it again next year!

Pingatore and Goers Rewrite Record Book

The IBCA would like to congratulate St Joseph's coach Gene Pingatore and Rockford Boylan coach (and IBCA Past President) Steve Goers on surpassing the mark for Career Coaching Wins!  Former Peoria Manual coach Dick Van Scyoc previously held the record of 826 wins.

Coach Pingatore reached 827 wins on Friday, January 16th at Carmel HS in Mundelein, while Coach Goers hit the 827 mark on Friday, February 6th at Belvidere North.
