The following is from Alex Renchen, former Head Boys Basketball Coach at Kankakee High School and Bradley-Bourbonnais High School:

Objectives and Keys:

  • Create long 2’s or open 3’s from non shooters
  • Five keys: 1) ball Pressure 2)Position/Vision 3) No splits 4) talk 5) Contact & rebound
  • Continually point to your man and talk to your teammates.  Call your WORK!
  • Guard someone: don’t have two defensive players on the same offensive player.
  • Defense takes the shape of the offense’s alignment.
  • Help side defenders straddle the weak side lane line. 
  • No drives, No seconds, No rhythm

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • #1 (point Row 1) man is the boss match from him. 2(wing Row 2)first to right of point, 3(wing Row 2) first to left of point, 4(row3) first to wings(2) right(low block, High post, other low block, 5(row 3) first to wings (3) left (low block, high post, other low block)

Teaching Points:

  • Begin teaching from a 2-1-2 low set, 2-1-2 high set, 1-3-1 set, 1-4 set, 1-2-2 set.  Then have cuts from overload spots
  • Guard cuts to strong corner
  • Forward cuts to strong corner
  • Passer cuts to weak corner
  • Passer cuts to strong corner


Simple Rules:

  1. Dribble is played man to man until 2 defenders bump
  2. Cutters away from the ball "let them go" sotp on ball side lane line
  3. Cutters to the ball are played man to man until two defenders bump
  4. If a man is open and in front of you, he is your man
  5. Communication: "ball," "cutter coming," "cutter away"
  6. Switch screens, can trap ball screens


Drills to Teach Concepts of Match-Up ( give up no layups, protect inside out):

  • 4 Offense vs. 3 Defense (24 seconds)
  • 4 vs 4
  • 5 vs 4
  • 5 vs 5


Defending Screens and Sets:

  • 1-2-2 set
  • 2-3 set
  • 1-3-1 set
  • 1-4 set
  • 2-1-2 set
  • Shadow (Box & 1) Row 1 takes a man, allows him no catch, remaining four defenders follow match rules

Alex Renchen 002

 Alex Renchen has been a basketball coach for over 35 years, earning 353 wins as a head coach. Coach Renchen was the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Kankakee High School for 14 years and the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Bradley-Bourbonnais High School for 13 years. He also served as an assistant coach at Kankakee High School and Kankakee Community College. He is currently an assistant coach at Peotone High School.
